CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 15 (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Sting have
their first winning streak of the season, riding 17 points from
All-Star Tangela Smith to a 75-65 victory over the Indiana
Fever.
The Sting (5-16), who entered the All-Star break with the WNBA's
worst record, have opened the second half of the season with
two impressive wins.
Tammy Sutton-Brown added 13 points and nine rebounds for
Charlotte, which has won consecutive games for the first time
since August 23-25, 2005 and back-to-back home games for the
first time since September 9-11, 2004.
Smith scored six points in a 17-2 run that closed the second
quarter and gave Charlotte a 39-24 halftime lead. The Sting
used an 8-2 burst in the third period to extend their advantage
to a commanding 47-26.
The Fever closed to 58-54 on a jumper by Tan White with 6:53
remaining. But the Sting responded with a 10-2 spurt capped by
Helen Darling's jumper that made it 68-56 with 3:44 to go.
The Sting appear to have the Fever's number. They improved to
2-1 this season, with the only loss coming in overtime.
All-Stars Tamika Catchings and Tamika Whitmore scored 17 points
apiece for Indiana, which dropped to 6-7 on the road. White
added 13 points off the bench for the Fever, who shot a dismal
32 percent (19-of-59) from the field.
