CHARLOTTE, N.C., July 14 (Ticker) -- Tangela Smith put on an
All-Star performance for the Charlotte Sting.
Smith scored a career-high 25 points as the Sting snapped a
five-game losing streak with an 81-65 victory over the San
Antonio Silver Stars.
Sheri Sam collected 15 points and Tammy Sutton-Brown added 14,
11 rebounds and four blocks for the Sting, who built a 40-33
halftime lead. They led the entire second half in their first
home win since June 9, a span of five games.
Smith, who was coming off her first career All-Star game, made
10-of-14 shots in 30 minutes. The 6-4 forward made all three of
her free throws and tied a career high with four assists.
The Silver Stars pulled within 47-46 with 6:09 remaining in the
third quarter on a layup by Chantelle Anderson. But Sam made a
3-pointer 19 seconds later to trigger a 10-0 run that gave the
Sting control for good.
Janel McCarville, the first overall pick in 2005, added nine
points and six rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 51 percent
(32-of-63) and made 11-of-14 free throws.
Agnieszka Bibrzycka scored 11 points and Vickie Johnson added 10
points and six rebounds for San Antonio, which dropped its
second straight game after winning four in a row.
