Chasity Melvin collected 20 points and 10 rebounds and Crystal Robinson scored 14 points for the Mystics (10-10), who built a 46-38 halftime lead, then held on over the final two quarters.

Sanford enjoyed the best game of her four-year career, making 10-of-14 shots in 33 minutes. The 6-4 forward could have had bigger numbers but she managed to make just half of her 10 free throws.

The Sky pulled within 69-67 with 8:10 remaining on Bernadette Ngoyisa's layup. But Robinson made a 3-ponter 18 seconds later to trigger a 13-5 surge that gave the Mystics control for good.

All-Star Alana Beard also reached double figures with 10 points for Washington, which shot 54 percent (32-of-59).

Ngoyisa and Amanda Lassiter scored 17 points apiece for the expansion Sky (3-15), who have lost eight straight on the road since a season-opening victory at Charlotte.

Next Games: Chicago hosts Houston on Friday, while Washington plays at Chicago on Sunday.
