Mercury-Shock: Play |
Third in the league in scoring at 21.7 points per game, Pondexter eclipsed her previous high of 30 points done in consecutive games early last month. She made 12-of-19 shots - including 4-of-6 3-pointers - as she controlled the entire game.
In ending a three-game slide, the Mercury never trailed after the opening minute. Pondexter scored four points in an 11-3 run that opened a 20-11 lead and drained a 3-pointer to cap a 9-0 surge and widen the advantage to 40-24 with 3:51 left in the second quarter.
Phoenix continued to extend the margin and opened an 84-57 bulge on a 3-pointer by Kelly Miller with 8:29 remaining. The Mercury blew a 17-point lead in Sunday's home loss to Washington but easily held on against Detroit.
Miller scored 14 points and Diana Taurasi added 13 for the Mercury, who shot 45 percent (34-of-75).
Deanna Nolan scored 15 points and Plenette Pierson added 14 for the Shock, who shot 41 percent (29-of-70).
