Tan White made a 3-pointer with 5:43 to go, giving the Fever the lead for good at 51-48. Indiana held on by making 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch.
Alana Beard scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Washington, which fell to 7-1 at the Verizon Center. The Mystics had won nine in a row at home dating to last season.
Los Angeles (7-0), Detroit (6-0) and Indiana (6-0) are the league's lone unbeaten teams at home.
