Sales scored eight points in the first quarter, when Connecticut raced to a 19-8 lead. Houston made just 4-of-20 shots and committed five of its 17 turnovers in the opening period.
Holding a 38-20 advantage at the half, the Sun scored the first seven points of the third quarter to take their biggest lead.
Named to the WNBA's All-Decade Team earlier this year, Thompson had a forgettable night. The six-year veteran was held to a career-low two points on 1-of-12 shooting.
It also was a struggle for Comets star Sheryl Swoopes, who was limited to nine points on 4-of-15 shooting.
Dawn Staley scored 17 points and Michelle Snow had 14 and 12 rebounds for the Comets, who shot just 34 percent (24-of-71) overall.
