SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 21 (Ticker) -- Erin Buescher and Yolanda Griffith were unstoppable in the paint.
Buescher scored 16 points off the bench and Griffith added 15
and eight rebounds as the Sacramento Monarchs posted a 75-69
triumph over the San Antonio Silver Stars, who were handed their
first road loss.
The duo of Buescher and Griffith combined to make 11-of-15 from
the field and block four shots for Sacramento, which shot 43
percent (28-of-64) overall.
Tied at 63-63 with 4:12 remaining, the Monarchs took the lead
for good with an 8-0 surge. Kara Lawson scored four of her six
points in the run.
LaToya Thomas' two free throws cut the deficit to 71-67 with 22
seconds, but Griffith and Lawson each made a pair from the line
to seal the victory.
Nicole Powell scored 10 points and Ticha Penicheiro contributed
six assists and six rebounds for Sacramento, which was playing
the opener of a three-game homestand.
Rookie Sophia Young scored 16 points and Kendra Wecker and
Thomas added 12 apiece for the Silver Stars, who shot 37 percent
(23-of-62) and made just 4-of-15 attempts from 3-point range in
losing for the first time in six road contests.
