Sparked by Ford's physical presence down low, the Shock garnered a 44-27 rebounding advantage. Detroit had a 13-1 cushion on the boards in the decisive third quarter.
Holding a 46-44 lead, the Shock used a 9-0 surge to take control. Smith capped the burst with a 3-pointer with 1:50 remaining in the third.
Named to WNBA's All-Decade Team earlier this week, Tamika Catchings struggled the entire night for Indiana. The forward scored just three points on 1-of-10 shooting.
Tamika Whitmore scored 19 points and Anna DeForge 15 for Indiana, which was denied its second three-game winning streak of the season. The Fever shot just 34 percent (21-of-62).
