SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 2 (Ticker) -- Vickie Johnson and the San
Antonio Silver Stars have shined away from home.
Johnson scored 22 points as the surprising Silver Stars remained
unbeaten on the road by holding on for a 74-71 victory over the
Sacramento Monarchs.
Kendra Wecker added 16 points for the Silver Stars, who improved
to 3-0 on the road despite having a 21-point third-quarter lead
whittled to one in the final minute. San Antonio went just
2-15 on the road last season.
The Monarchs used a 16-3 surge in the fourth quarter to get back
in the game. Kara Lawson's basket with 60 seconds remaining
pulled Sacramento within 72-71.
Lawson had a chance to give the Monarchs the lead but had her
shot blocked by Sophia Young with 18 seconds left. Three
seconds later, Johnson made two free throws for her only points
of the fourth quarter and a 74-71 edge.
In the final five seconds, Lawson missed a pair of 3-pointers,
sending Sacramento to its first loss in four home contests.
Lawson scored 15 points to pace Sacramento, which shot just 34
percent (24-of-71) from the field. Katie Feenstra's three-point
play with 3:18 left in the third quarter capped a 14-4 run and
gave the Silver Stars their biggest lead at 61-40.
