AUBURN HILLS, Mich., May 24 (Ticker) -- Katie Smith finished off her
former club.
Smith scored 11 points and capped a clinching run with a
3-pointer as the Detroit Shock pulled away late for their first
victory of the season, a 78-69 triumph over the Minnesota Lynx.
Cheryl Ford scored 17 points to lead five players in double
figures and grabbed 14 rebounds for Detroit, which lost to
Indiana in their season opener but bounced back against
Minnesota, shooting 48 percent (30-of-62) from the field.
A former WNBA scoring champion and an Olympian, Smith was
acquired from Minnesota last season. She made just 4-of-12
shots, but one was the clincher.
The Lynx used a 12-6 run and pulled within 68-64 with 4:41
remaining on a 3-pointer by top overall pick Seimone Augustus,
who scored 15 points.
The Shock responded with a 7-0 spurt as Ruth Riley made a pair
of hoops before Smith drained a 3-pointer for a 75-64 advantage
with 3:08 to go. The Lynx got no closer than the final margin.
Riley and Swin Cash scored 14 points apiece and Deanna Nolan
added 13, seven rebounds and six assists for Detroit, which took
the lead for good in the third quarter.
Kristen Mann and Adrian Williams scored 12 points each for
Minnesota (0-2), which shot 40 percent (26-of-65) and was
outrebounded, 35-27.
