CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 23 (Ticker) -- Lisa Leslie's dominance
spoiled the Charlotte Sting's home opener.
Leslie scored 27 points and grabbed 16 rebounds and Tamara Moore
added 14 points to lead the Los Angeles Sparks to a 72-65
victory over the Sting.
After scoring 24 points in Saturday's 90-67 loss to the Seattle
Storm, Leslie made 11-of-16 shots and scored nine points in the
fourth quarter of the Sparks' first victory of the season.
Los Angeles outscored Charlotte, 21-7, in the third quarter to
take a 51-41 lead into the fourth. The Sting rallied to tie the
game, 65-65, with 56 seconds remaining before the Sparks scored
the final seven points.
Monique Currie scored 19 points and Tangela Smith added 13 for
the Charlotte, which has lost both games this season after
posting a 6-28 record last year.
Smith reached the 3,000 point plateau for her career on a layup with 56.9 remaining in the fourth quarter. Smith became just the 10th person in WNBA history to score 3,000 points.
The Sting were outrebounded, 46-27, and shot just 34 percent
(21-of-62) from the floor.
