CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Sting host the Los Angeles Sparks in their home opener on Tuesday.

The Sting try to start 2006 on a positive note at Charlotte Bobcats Arena following a 83-82 loss to Chicago on Friday. Sheri Sam scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds.

LaToya Bond added 15 points and Tangela Smith had 14 and seven boards for Charlotte, which committed 27 turnovers.

The Sparks look to rebound after a 90-67 drubbing to Seattle on Sunday. Lisa Leslie scored 24 points before fouling out and Mwadi Mabika added 19 for Los Angeles, which shot just 34 percent (21-of-62) overall in the first stop of its six-game road trip.

Chamique Holdsclaw missed the game due to family issues and her return date is unknown.

The Sting have won three straight at home against the Sparks.
