INDIANAPOLIS, May 20 (Ticker) -- The Indiana Fever caught fire at the
right time.
Tamika Catchings had 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Fever took
over down the stretch en route to a season-opening 67-60
victory over the Detroit Shock.
Anna DeForge added 14 points and Ebony Hoffman collected 13 and
13 rebounds for the Fever, who used a 16-2 surge over the final
3:14 of the contest.
DeForge's 3-pointer with 2:01 remaining gave the Fever the lead
for good at 59-58.
Bringing back only four players from their team that lost to
Connecticut in the Eastern Conference finals last season, the
Fever were able to open the 2006 campaign on a positive despite
shooting just 26 percent (15-of-57).
Katie Smith scored 19 points and
Cheryl Ford and Deanna Nolan
had 10 apiece for Detroit, which squandered a 29-20 halftime
lead.
The Shock shot 37 percent (25-of-68) and made just 1-of-12
3-pointers.
