SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Lauren Jackson had a big game and prevented
Tamika Catchingsfrom doing the same.
Jackson had season highs of 24 points and 15 rebounds as the
Seattle Storm shut down Catchings in an 83-77 victory over the
Indiana Fever, their fourth straight win.
Sue Bird had 20 points and seven assists for the Storm, the
defending WNBA champions who have won by an average of nearly 14
points during their winning streak.
One of the top players in the world, Jackson had not been
playing partuclarly well, averaging just 14.5 points while
shooting 41.5 percent from the field. However, the Australian
made 6-of-13 shots and 11-of-11 free throws while dominating the
interior on both ends.
Catchings, a former WNBA Rookie of the Year and the Fever's
leading scorer at 16.6 points per game, was harassed by Jackson
and others into 3-of-16 shooting. She had 12 points and nine
rebounds.
Despite Catchings' struggles, Indiana held a 45-44 lead before
Seattle took the lead for good with an 8-0 run that began and
ended with baskets by Janell Burse, who had 15 points and 10
boards.
A 3-pointer by rookie Tan White, who scored a season-high 26
points, cut the deficit to 76-71 with 1:27 to go. Bird
responded with two free throws with a minute left, and it was at
least a two-possession game thereafter.
Betty Lennoxhad 13 points and seven boards for the Storm, who
held a 37-30 advantage on the glass and made 31-of-37 free
throws. The Fever were 12-of-17 from the line.
Kelly Millerhad 19 points and seven assists for Indiana, which
fell to 1-2 on the road.
