The Sun had a chance to tie, but rookie Lindsey Whelan missed the second of two foul shots. Stacey Dales-Schuman won a jump ball off the ensuing rebound, and Connecticut called timeout with 1.8 seconds to go. But Taj McWilliams-Franklin missed a 10-footer as time expired.
Rookie Alana Beard scored 14 points and made a key block down the stretch and Nakia Sanford added 13 and 10 rebounds for the Mystics (11-14), who again played without Chamique Holdsclaw and snapped a two-game slide.
The team's leading scorer at 19 points per game, Holdsclaw was not at the game and said in a statement that she also will miss Sunday's game due to personal reasons.
Nykesha Sales scored 23 points for the Sun (13-13), who fell out of a virtual three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Conference.
