SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 29 (Ticker) -- Mwadi Mabika struggled from
the floor all game long before coming up big in double overtime.
Mabika made only 8-of-28 shots but scored seven of her 24 points
in the second overtime, lifting the Los Angeles Sparks to an
85-80 triumph over the Sacramento Monarchs.
Nikki Teasley added 19 points and Lisa Leslie chipped in 17 and 12 rebounds for Los Angeles, which blew a 14-point lead midway
through the second half but recovered to post its 10th victory
in 11 games. Leslie came into the game two points shy of 4,000 for her career,
and reached the milestone at the 13:26 mark of the first half.
Mabika, who hit a shot from beyond mid-court at the halftime
buzzer, sank a 3-pointer to start the second overtime to give
Los Angeles the lead for good, 81-78.
The lead was 81-80 when Mabika made a jumper in the lane with 34
seconds left, and after Sacramento's Kara Lawson lost the ball
in traffic with 10 seconds remaining, Mabika iced it with two
free throws with 2.9 seconds to play.
Lawson had 20 points and matched her franchise record with six
3-pointers for the Monarchs, who had won the first two meetings
with the league-leading Sparks this season.
