Nicole Ohlde converted two free throws 19 seconds later for Minnesota, which finished 17-of-22 from the line in its fifth straight home victory and third consecutive win overall.
Rookie Lindsay Whalen's driving three-point play moved Connecticut within 64-63 with 3.8 seconds left. Smith, who finished with 15 points and four assists, was fouled and made two more from the line with 2.7 seconds remaining.
Connecticut's Nykesha Sales had a chance to tie, but her 3-pointer bounced off the back of the rim.
Ohlde had 21 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks for Minnesota and Tamika Williams scored 10 points.
Whalen scored 18 points on 6-of-12 shooting and Sales added 11 for Connecticut, which had a three-game road winning streak snapped.
