Houston suffered its third straight first-round playoff exit last season, losing to Sacramento in three games.

In the rematch, Thompson dominated her inside battle with Yolanda Griffith and added the game's key shot from the 3-point arc.

Thompson took a feed from former Monarch Holland-Corn and drained a 3-pointer that snapped a 48-48 tie with 5:07 left, giving Houston the lead for good. Holland-Corn also assisted on Dominique Canty's basket with 87 seconds to go for a 56-52 advantage.

The Comets made 7-of-8 foul shots in the final minute to seal it.

Griffith struggled to score nine points on 3-of-10 shooting. No Monarch starter reached double figures and Ticha Penicheiro- whose runner in the lane with three seconds left clinched last year's playoff series - logged 25 scoreless minutes.

Holland-Corn, who played for Sacramento from 1999-2002, won a championship with Detroit last season before the veteran guard was traded to Houston in the offseason.
