SACRAMENTO, Calif., July 10 (Ticker) -- John Whisenant won his first game as coach of the Sacramento Monarchs as Yolanda Griffith recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds in an 89-76 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars.

Monarchs point guard Ticha Penicheiro set a WNBA record with 10 steals and also handed out 11 assists.

Whisenant, the team's assistant general manager, replaced Maura McHugh, who was fired Tuesday after the Monarchs lost their third straight game. Sacramento is in fifth place in the Western Conference.

Griffith led a balanced attack as five players scored in double figures. Tangela Smith, who grabbed 12 rebounds, scored 11 of her 16 points in the first half, helping the Monarchs to a 44-36 lead at the intermission.

Edna Campbell contributed 14 points for Sacramento, while DeMya Walker and Ruthie Bolton chipped in 12 and 10, respectively.

LaQuanda Quick made six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 22 points for San Antonio, which has lost four of its last five games.

The Silver Stars shot less than 39 percent from the field (22-of-57) and committed 25 turnovers that the Monarchs converted into 26 points.
