Hammon made her second straight start in place of the injured Vickie Johnson and put on a display of outstanding shooting. She may have a permanent spot in the starting five after making 12-of-16 shots and dominating the action.
Minnesota took an early 15-8 lead on two free throws by Janell Burse -- her only points of the game -- with 10:08 left before halftime. Hammon capped a 12-4 spurt with a basket for a 20-19 advantage for New York with 5:03 remaining.
A pair of three-pointers by Hammon snapped a 22-22 tie and gave New York the lead for good.
Hammon's previous career high was a 23-point performance against Utah on June 3, 2000. The Liberty took their largest lead, a 51-36 cushion, on Hammon's final three-pointer of the game for with just under 11 minutes to go.
Katie Smith led the scoring for Minnesota with 12 points.
