PHOENIX, May 28 (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Mercury survived awful shooting and escaped with their first win of the season, a 51-50 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars.

The Mercury lost the first two games of a three-game homestand and appeared headed for a third after missing 14 straight shots early in the second half and falling behind by nine points.

But Adrian Williams and Stacey Thomas led a comeback, and Phoenix held on in the final minutes as San Antonio could not make a shot.

Williams had 14 points and 16 rebounds, Nevriye Yilmaz scored 10 points and fellow reserve Thomas added nine off the bench for the Mercury, who shot just 34 percent (22-of-64) from the field.

Phoenix scored the first bucket of the second half to open a 31-24 lead before going cold. San Antonio (1-1) scored 16 straight points -- eight by Marie Ferdinand -- and took a 40-31 lead on a layup by Adrienne Goodson with 11:35 to go.

The Mercury fought back, taking a 50-48 lead on two free throws by Williams with 2:44 to play. San Antonio's Jennifer Azzi tied it with a jumper at the 2:12 mark, but the Silver Stars did not score again.

Tamicha Jackson made the second of two free throws to give Phoenix the lead with 1:43 to play. Gwen Jackson missed an open layup with 1:09 remaining and Goodson missed a three-pointer with 4.1 seconds remaining.

Ferdinand scored 15 points and Sylvia Crawley added 12 for the Silver Stars, who shot under 38 percent (22-of-58). They fell to 2-9 all-time at America West Arena.
