MINNEAPOLIS, May 6 -- Five-time US Olympian and WNBA rookie Teresa Edwards made her preseason debut a memorable one as the Minnesota Lynx defeated the Detroit Shock 86-72 in the league's preseason opener Tuesday afternoon.

Edwards finished with eight assists in just 15 minutes of action, while Katie Smith led the Lynx with 18 points and Tamika Williams added 10 points and eight rebounds. Rookie Jordan Adams chipped in with 14 points.

Swin Cash and Deanna Nolan each scored 14 points to lead the Shock who were without potential starters Ruth Riley and Kedra Holland-Corn, both of whom are still fulfilling their overseas commitments. Cheryl Ford, the third overall selection in the 2003 WNBA Draft, scored 10 points and added six rebounds in her first game for Detroit and Ayana Walker added 10 points of her own.
