INDIANAPOLIS, July 19 (Ticker) -- Becky Hammon and Crystal Robinson
provided the firepower to carry the New York Liberty to their
fifth victory in six games.
Hammon and Robinson used some hot shooting to combine for 18
points in the first half as the Liberty rolled to a 70-62
triumph over the Indiana Fever.
Hammon made her first three 3-point attempts and was 3-of-5 from
the floor in the first half while Robinson was 3-of-3 with a
pair of 3-pointers. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Hammon opened a
19-12 advantage with 11 1/2 minutes left before halftime.
Rookie Tamika Catchings' layup pulled Indiana within 29-18
before a basket by Robinson triggered an 8-0 burst that extended
New York's lead to 37-18 with 1:49 remaining. The Liberty
scored 17 points off 12 turnovers by the Fever in the first half
and took a 38-22 cushion into the locker room.
Indiana turned in a much better effort in the second half and
used an 8-0 run to climb within 64-59 on a pair of free throws
by Olympia Scott-Richardson with 50 seconds left. The Fever
nearly forced a turnover, but a loose ball came right to New
York's Tamika Whitmore, who was fouled and made two free throws.
Vickie Johnson added four points in the final 30 seconds to seal
the victory for the Liberty.
Four players scored in double figures for New York as Hammon
came up with 15 points off the bench and Whitmore added 13.
Point guard Teresa Weatherspoon had four of the Liberty's 16
steals.
Catchings collected 21 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana, which
has lost four straight on its WNBA record eight-game homestand.
Scott-Richardson added 10 points.
