Sacramento was buoyed by the return of its injured stars, Yolanda Griffith and Penicheiro. Griffith posted 15 points and 10 rebounds in her first game since June 1, and Penicheiro had 10 points, seven assists and five steals in her first game since June 20.

Cleveland's Merlakia Jones hit an 11-foot fadeaway jumper in the lane with 7.7 seconds remaining to tie the game before the Monarchs called timeout and set up the winning play. Penicheiro lofted an inbounds pass inside to Grooms, who converted a layup as she was fouled by rookie Penny Taylor.

After Grooms missed the free throw, Rockers rookie Brandi McCain misfired on 16-foot jumper at the buzzer.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak for the Monarchs, who have the worst record in the Western Conference at 3-14. Ruthie Bolton had 16 points and Grooms finished with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting.

The loss was the sixth in a row for the Rockers (6-12), who are ahead of only Detroit (2-16) in the Eastern Conference. Ann Wauters led the Rockers with 18 points and Chasity Melvin added 15.

Cleveland activated guard Jennifer Rizzotti from the injured list before the game. She played just seven minutes off the bench and had one rebound and one assist.
