Miami rookie Tamara Moore scored in the lane to halve the deficit. But Smith split a pair from the line with 8.6 seconds to go, and the Sol missed badly on the final shot.
Svetlana Abrosimova scored 21 points and Smith added 18 for the Lynx (1-1), who lost their season opener at home Saturday. Minnesota, which did not trail in the second half, shot 56 percent (20-of-36) from the field to overcome 23 turnovers.
Moore made 6-of-13 shots and 8-of-8 free throws to set a Sol rookie record for points in a game. Debbie Black was the only other Miami player in double figures with 10 points. The Sol shot 37 percent (22-of-59).
Miami missed 19 of its first 22 shots in the second half and trailed, 49-40, before making five in a row to get back in the game.
