Catchings’ West Squad Comes Up Short In Celebrity Game

Fever star Tamika Catchings and the West squad came up just short in the 2014 Celebrity Game Friday night in New Orleans. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists as the East team, coached by ex-Pacer Jalen Rose, came away with a 60-56 win.

Catchings played just 16 minutes, had a steal but most of all, had fun. Comedian Kevin Hart, the MVP in the past two games, was on her team and tried to take over but failed. He was voted as the MVP but wisely passed it over to Duncan.

“For me, the thing I enjoy about it is meeting a lot of different actors and different people that might not usually be in this setting,” said Catchings. “Then of course, just the fun element of doing something we love. It’s fun coming here to be part of the atmosphere.

The game admittedly was the most competitive in years. There were seven ties and 14 lead changes. The West team got to within two points with 85 seconds remaining but they missed six foul shots and a half-dozen layups late.

Catchings played in the Celebrity game for the fifth time — 2007, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 — and the fourth consecutive year. Her team was undefeated until last year, and she has since fallen two years in a row.

“There’s a time and place to be (competitive),” Catchings added. “You always want to win but the whole gist of the weekend is just to have a good time.”

Catchings was one of three WNBA players involved. Tulsa’s Skylar Diggins and Chicago’s Elena Delle Done also suited up.

Other celebrities that played included: former NBA guard Bruce Bowen, singer Nick Cannon, rapper Wale, rapper Snoop Dogg, as well as ESPN’s Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic.
