Sutton-Brown Book-Signing Event
As part of a “Meet the Artists Gala Reception” sponsored by the Indianapolis Public Library’s African-American History Committee, Indiana Fever center and children’s author Tammy Sutton-Brown will read to kids and take part in an autograph and book signing event this Saturday, Feb. 9 at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street. The event is a part of the 25th anniversary of “Meet the Artists,” which began February 1 and continues through March 23, where library guests can view the works of prominent local African-American artists.
The entire community is invited to meet the artists and enjoy an evening of cultural entertainment during the “Meet the Artists Gala Reception” on Saturday from 5:45 to 10 p.m. This free event features feature a number of performers, including Staci McCrackin and the Euphony Band; Walter King the Spellbinder of Magic; Lamar Campbell & the Spirit of Praise Gospel Choir; poets Kadiesha Ricks, Tasha Jones and Gabrielle Patterson; and the Sterling Designer Showcase Fashion Show, coordinated by award-winning fashion designer Alpha Blackburn.
During the Gala, Sutton-Brown will read to children in the Learning Curve, from her 2011 debut book Cree & Scooter Hit the Slopes in British Columbia. Sutton-Brown will join other local African-American authors for book sales and signings throughout the evening. Young people can also participate in a workshop presented by Art With a Heart in the Learning Curve. The six-week exhibit, sponsored by The Indianapolis Public Library’s African-American History Committee, has grown to become one of the city’s premiere cultural events while providing an avenue for African-American artists to showcase their works. The exhibit will feature works in a variety of artistic mediums throughout Central Library surrounding the theme, “World Outside My Window: A Silver Soiree.”
Participating artists include Eric Shelton (mixed media), Jerome W. Chambers (oil, pencil), D. delReverda-Jennings (acrylics), Anthony Radford (mixed media), Kevin Johnson (mixed media), Brittany Tate (photography), Al Brown (acrylics, water color pencil), Michele Wood (acrylics, book illustrator), LaShawnda Crowe-Storm (mixed media, quilts), Michael Gillespie (mixed media), Dennis Green (sculptor), Quinn Hartzol-Toney (handmade jewelry), Flora Jefferson (handmade jewelry), Regina Brown (dolls), and LJ McCaleb-Doucoure (photography). A youth exhibit coordinated by Art With a Heart also will be featured.
“Meet the Artists 2013” is made possible by the Christel DeHaan Family Foundation and Friends of the Library through gifts to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation.
