Indianapolis Youth Get Fever Fit and Army Strong at Orchard & Bloom
As part of the Indiana Fever’s health initiative, first-round draft pick Jené Morris and two soldiers from the U.S. Army put on a Get Fever Fit Clinic on Saturday, May 1. This event helped tip-off the Fever’s WNBA Cares Week of Service making the first stop at the Orchard & Bloom event at Holiday Park.
While kids were walking around participating in the Orchard and Bloom activities they had a chance to take a break and get active. The U.S. Army went through a series of strength and conditioning drills to give the kids a little taste of what it takes to be healthy enough to be in the Army. Meanwhile, Morris taught the kids stationary ball handling drills before they practiced dribbling. Being a guard, Morris had plenty of tips to excel at ball handling and after a few drills it was time to test their skills with relay races.
After heart rates were up and muscles were built, Morris and the U.S. Army gave their advice on what types of foods and beverages the kids should, and shouldn’t, eat and drink. They also discussed all the different activities you can do to stay active such as play basketball, play tag, ride your bike, skateboard and many more.
The Get Fever Fit program presented by the U.S. Army, a program of WNBA Cares, holds monthly Get Fever Fit clinics throughout the WNBA season. In these clinics, Fever coaches and players along with a U.S. Army Soldier teach proper exercise techniques, show how being active can be fun with basketball drills and teach about healthy living styles including eating and exercise habits.
The Indiana Fever tips off the 2010 season on May 15 against the Washington Mystics. Prior to its home opener, the Fever will conduct a series of community service activities throughout Indianapolis as part of WNBA Cares Week of Service. Events include Habitat for Humanity (May 6), Choices for Champions at the May 7 preseason game, another Get Fever Fit Clinic (May 13) and the team’s annual Read to Achieve Tipoff (May 14).
