Fever Waives Baker and Lewis On Eve of First Preseason Game
To make room for a large contingent of guards in the opening week of training camp, the Indiana Fever has waived returning players Sherill Baker and Doneeka Lewis. The Fever travels to Minnesota to face the Lynx in a preseason opening game on Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m. ET). The game will take place at the College of St. Benedict.
Baker played in 13 games for the Fever last season before missing most of the season with a bruised wrist. Lewis signed a free agent contract late in the 2008 season and appeared in just eight games. Offseason additions at guard have included former LSU product Erica White (acquired in a dispersal draft last December), first round draft pick Briann January of Arizona State, and 12-year WNBA veteran Tamecka Dixon. Other returning candidates at guard are Tully Bevilaqua, Katie Douglas and Tan White.
Indiana hosts a preseason game next Thursday, May 28, against the Chicago Sky, and makes a final preseason road appearance when it visits San Antonio on June 2. Training camp continues through the opening week of June, with the Fever officially opening the summer season at Atlanta on Saturday, June 6 (7:00 p.m.). Itís home opener is Sunday, June 7 (7:00 p.m.) against the Minnesota Lynx, exactly 10 years after the franchise was founded (June 7, 1999).
