Fever shoot down stars

May 5, 2012

Briann January made a game-winning layup with 0:03 remaining Saturday night to lift the Indiana Fever to a 69-67 preseason victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars, in a game conducted at Trinity University.

January, who missed the final 24 games of the 2011 regular season due to a torn ACL on June 19, played 31 minutes and contributed 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Former Silver Star guard Roneeka Hodges, acquired in a trade last month, paced the Fever with 16 points. Reigning WNBA MVP Tamika Catchings also added 12. Free agent Erlana Larkins led Indiana on the boards with seven rebounds.

San Antonio led 36-31 at the intermission, but the Fever rallied for a 57-53 advantage heading into the final period. The Silver Stars led by five, 67-62, with 2:42 left to play, but Shavonte Zellous narrowed the gap to 67-64 and Hodges hit a 3-pointer to knot the score at 67 with 42 seconds to play. San Antonio's Danielle Adams missed a shot with 22 seconds to play and after Larkins cleared the rebound, Indiana called timeout to setup January's final play.

Adams led San Antonio with 12 points off the bench.

The two clubs meet in preseason action again on Wednesday when the Fever hosts Education Day featuring Choices for Champions, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The Fever and Silver Stars tipoff at noon, preceded by an educational event for schools and kids, beginning at 10 a.m.
