Overseas Updates

January 24, 2013: Zellous, the Fever star who was named the WNBA’s Most Improved Player last summer, was the top scorer in the competitive Turkish League last winter. She transitioned from Mersin to powerhouse Galatasaray in this season’s Turkish circuit, and while she is not among league scoring leaders at the moment, she is leading Gala to very prominent standing.

The Orlando native and graduate of the University of Pittsburgh does rank fourth among all EuroLeague scorers, leading Galatasaray with 18.1 points per game in EuroLeague competition where its current 6-2 record is tied atop Group C with USK Praha of Czech Republic. Gala was ranked No. 4 in EuroBasket’s Top 100, immediately behind USK Praha (3rd), cross-town Turkish rival Fenerbahce (2nd) and UMMC Ekaterinberg (1st) of Russia.

In the Turkish League, Galatasaray sits at 15-1 with Fenerbahce currently 14-2. Gala’s only loss was to Fener, 79-67, on Christmas Day. A rematch of the league’s best teams, both based in Istanbul, is not until March 29. Within its in-country domestic league, Zellous leads the club with 30.6 minutes per game while posting averages of 13.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. She is second on the team in points, steals and assists. Her season scoring high in Turkey is a 23-point effort against Orduspor, in November.

In the EuroLeague where Gala’s 56.4 points against average is tops in Europe, Zellous has reached double-figure scoring in seven of eight games. She scored just 7 in a 68-48 loss to Perfumerias (Spain) on Jan. 5. Her high was a 32-point outburst against Novi Zagreb (Croatia). Gala is hoping for a return to the EuroLeague’s top eight where it finished 5th (2012) and 8th (2013) the past two seasons.

November 13, 2013: Zellous continues scoring at a hot pace in Europe, averaging 11.4 points with 4.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game for Turkish power Galatasaray. Gala is 6-0 and in first place in the Turkish League. Gala won its EuroLeague opener against Spanish power Perfumerias Avenida, behind 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting by Zellous.

October 23, 2013: Zellous had 11 points and seven rebounds in Galatasaray’s season-opening 66-53 win over Botas last weekend.
