INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever has acquired Australian point guard Erin Phillips and a 2012 third-round draft pick as part of a three-team deal with the Seattle Storm and Washington Mystics. In exchange for Phillips, who signed a free agent contract with Seattle on Feb. 9, the Fever dealt 2012 draft picks to each of the Storm and Mystics.

A three-year WNBA veteran with the Connecticut Sun, Phillips was Australia’s backup point guard during the 2010 World Championships, 2008 Olympics and 2006 World Championships where she teamed with former Fever guard Tully Bevilaqua. The 5-8 guard will stabilize the Fever backcourt with Briann January, Shavonte Zellous, rookie Jeanette Pohlen and All-Star shooting guard Katie Douglas.

Besides Phillips’ arrival in Indy, the three-team trade features Seattle sending first-round draft pick Jasmine Thomas and its 2012 first-round pick to Washington, in exchange for veteran All-Star Katie Smith and second-year forward Jacinta Monroe. Indiana dealt for Phillips and the Storm’s third-round selection in 2012 by dealing its 2012 second-round pick to Seattle and its third-round pick to Washington.

“The opportunity to acquire Erin Phillips is significant for our team,” said Chief Operating Officer and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf. “She is a strong combo guard who brings quality depth to our point guard and off-guard positions. She is a young but experienced player in the WNBA and internationally. I am thrilled to be adding her to our backcourt.”

Phillips, who turns 26 in May, was named to the Australian National Team at age 19. She competed in the Australian WNBL before being drafted by the Sun in the 2006 WNBA Draft. She played in every game with 13 starts as a rookie in 2006. She appeared in 32 games with 18 starts and an 8.1-point scoring average in 2009. Phillips played just eight games following the Beijing Olympics in 2008. She did not play in the 2010 WNBA season in order to train with the Australians. To make room for Phillips on its training camp roster, the Fever waived 2011 third-round pick Jori Davis.
