DOUGLAS NAMED TO WNBA ROSTER FOR “WNBA vs. USA BASKETBALL: THE STARS AT THE SUN”
News Release | July 7, 2010
A three-time WNBA All-Star, three-time All-WNBA recipient and three-time WNBA All-Defense selection, Indiana Fever star Katie Douglas has been named to the WNBA roster for this weekend’s “WNBA vs. USA Basketball: The Stars at the Sun” event at Mohegan Sun Arena. Douglas and five other WNBA stars were named to the final roster after a vote of league coaches.
Coaches selected Douglas along with Atlanta Dream teammates Sancho Lyttle and Iziane Castro Marques, Crystal Langhorne of the Washington Mystics, the Phoenix Mercury’s Penny Taylor and the Minnesota Lynx's Rebekkah Brunson.
The Stars at the Sun will showcase the world’s best female basketball players under one roof when the WNBA’s top talent faces the USA Basketball Women’s National Team, which will conduct a weekend training camp in advance of the World Championships in September. The event will be hosted by the Connecticut Sun on Saturday, July 10 and will be televised nationally on ESPN at 3:30 p.m. ET.
Ten leading players who received the most votes in Stars at the Sun fan balloting during May and June were guaranteed a position on team rosters. Players voted in who are already in the USA National Team Pool, including Douglas’ Indiana teammate Tamika Catchings, were assigned to the USA Basketball team led by head coach Geno Auriemma. Players voted in by the fans but not in the USA training pool were assigned to the WNBA team, coached by the Seattle Storm’s Brian Agler. Final WNBA players were selected by a vote of league coaches.
