Catchings Nominated for ESPY Award
INDIANAPOLIS – Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings has been named as one of five nominees for Best WNBA Player, as part of the 2006 ESPY Awards, to be held on Sunday, July 16 (9:00 p.m., ESPN). Fans can vote for their selections online at ESPN.com/espy2006. Voting concludes July 9.
The Fever’s “do-everything” All-Star currently leads the WNBA in steals and free throws, and ranks in the top 10 in league statistics in double-doubles (3rd), rebounds (6th), assists (6th), blocked shots (8th) and scoring (9th). She leads the entire WNBA in fan voting for the WNBA All-Star Game, and was recently named to the league’s All-Decade Team.
Catchings and the Fever are currently 12-5 and tied for first place in the WNBA Eastern Conference. The first team in the WNBA to reach 12 wins, Indiana has won seven of its last nine games and remains unbeaten (7-0) at home. The Fever hosts East co-leader Connecticut on Saturday (7:00 p.m.) at Conseco Fieldhouse.
The WNBA’s 2005 Defensive Player of the Year, Catchings was third in voting for the league’s MVP award while leading the Fever to the Eastern Conference Finals against Connecticut. Catchings has finished among the top three in voting for the league’s MVP award in three of the past four seasons, though has never won the award.
She joins Lauren Jackson (Seattle Storm), Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles Sparks), Sheryl Swoopes (Houston Comets) and Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) as ESPY nominees. Jackson won the 2005 ESPY award as the WNBA’s top player. Swoopes won the 2005 WNBA MVP award.
