QUOTABLE
Lin Dunn
In general:
“I thought we let Atlanta’s athleticism and quickness bother us today. They had up-tempo transitions that beat us down the floor. We had some turnovers that Price and Harding forced, and that costs us some early foul trouble. Once the game was only a 8 to 10 point game, I thought we had a chance. But then Harding had a great breakout. Atlanta has some strong athletes. We also had a few mental mistakes that really cost us a chance to get back into the game.”

ALANTA (AP) - Lindsey Harding scored 19 points to lead the Atlanta Dream past the Indiana Fever 84-74 on Tuesday.

Atlanta, the defending Eastern Conference champion, has won two straight but is fifth in the conference, four games behind the Fever.

Tamika Catchings had 22 points and Erin Phillips had 21 for Indiana, which has lost three straight for the first time this season.

Erika de Souza had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Atlanta. All-Star Angel McCoughtry, slowed by foul trouble, managed to score 15 points in only 19 minutes.

Atlanta was also without forward Sancho Lyttle (sore back) and guard Coco Miller (sprained right ankle) and had only nine players in uniform for the second straight game.

Despite the thin bench, Atlanta led 44-36 at halftime.

Jessica Davenport added 12 points and seven rebounds for Indiana, while Kate Douglas went 1-for-8 from the field and finished with four points. Iziane Castro Marques had 10 points for Atlanta.

Coach Marynell Meadors stuck with her starters for the entire first period. McCoughtry missed her first five shots from the field but made four straight free throws to cap a 10-0 run for an early 17-9 lead. Then McCoughtry left with three fouls with 4:20 remaining in the first half.

Alison Bales hit two jumpers in another 10-0 run to give the Dream a 36-20 lead in the second period. Indiana closed the first half with a 16-8 run to trail 44-36 at halftime.

McCoughtry had two quick third-period baskets before she was called for an offensive foul with 6:16 remaining, sending her back to the bench for the remainder of the period with four fouls.

With McCoughtry watching, Philips scored to cut Atlanta's lead to 50-47, but the Fever couldn't complete the comeback bid. Atlanta pushed its lead back to 66-56 at the end of the third period.

Philips hit a 3-pointer to cut Atlanta's lead to 77-67 and added another 3 with 2:11 remaining to trim the deficit to single digits for the first time in the period at 79-70.

McCoughtry had a basket and a free throw in the final 41 seconds to pad the lead.
