QUOTABLE
Brian Winers
In general:
“Nolan (Deanna) and Smith (Katie) are terrific guards. Detroit made a lot of shots and deserved to win. Tamika (Catchings) is questionable for tomorrow night. If she doesn't play, we'll make adjustments. The difference in tonight's game? Detroit made most of their shots and they made good adjustments throughout the game.”

Tan White
In general:
“I think that we started out and let Detroit set the tone. They hit some pretty easy baskets against our zone. Katie Smith had a great game. Every time we needed a stop, Deanna Nolan or Katie Smith hit a dagger.”

INDIANAPOLIS(AP) Katie Smith had a season-high 28 points Friday night to lead the Detroit Shock to an 89-80 victory over the Indiana Fever that pulled them into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference.

Deanna Nolan scored 19 points and Cheryl Ford added nine points and 11 rebounds for the Shock (16-5), who won their fifth straight game.

Tammy Sutton-Brown had 16 points and Tan White scored 13 for the Fever (16-5), who had their franchise-record six-game winning streak snapped.

Indiana's Tamika Catchings had 12 points before hurting her left foot late in third quarter when she landed on a Detroit player's foot following a rebound. Catchings, one of the WNBA's leading MVP candidates, didn't return.

Detroit began the third quarter with two straight baskets by Kara Braxton to extend its four-point halftime lead to 51-43. The Fever, trailing 65-56, closed the lead to six points following Sheri Sam's 30-foot jumper to end the quarter.

Indiana cut the deficit to 71-68 on White's runner with 6:32 left in the fourth quarter, but the Shock responded with a jumper by Plenette Pierson and two free throws by Ford.

Sutton-Brown's layup pulled the Fever within 82-76 with 34 seconds remaining, but Smith helped seal the victory by hitting four free throws in the final 22 seconds.

  • Tonight's win is the Shock's first at Conseco Fieldhouse in its last six appearances on the Fever's home floor. Detroit's last road win at Indiana had been June 9, 2004.
  • Despite not playing the fourth quarter due to an injury to her left foot, Tamika Catchings led the Fever in both rebounds with eight and assists with seven. Catchings has had at least five assists in six straight games and in eight of the last 10 contests.
  • Catchings heads into tomorrow's game at Chicago needing just 10 rebounds for 1,500 in her WNBA career.
  • With 11, Sheri Sam scored in double figures for the third time this season and the second time in the last five games.

  • Having shot 47.0 percent from the floor this season, the Fever have lost for the first time this season (7-1) when shooting 45+ percent from the floor.
  • Indiana's loss is just its third (14-3) when scoring at least 70 points.
  • The Fever outscored Detroit, 32-22, in the paint and that is the seventh straight time that Indiana has had 30+ points in the paint. The Fever has outscored its opponent in the paint in six of those seven games.
  • The Fever outscored Detroit, 15-2, on the fast break and the team's 15 fast-break points are its second most of the season. Indiana had a season-high 21 fast break points vs. Chicago, 7/8.
  • The Fever's attendance tonight of 9,210 matches its second largest crowd of the season and Indiana has drawn 7,000+ fans in six straight games.
