White Conducts "Be" Clinic

    Fever guard Tan White coached the young girls of Wheeler-Dowe Boys and Girls Club on exercising and eating healthy, Tuesday, June 19th, after attending practice herself.

    White lead them through one of the Fever’s Be Smart - Be Fit - Be Yourself Clinics, consisting of a series of stretches, and basketball drills incorporated with fitness. The clinic not only touched on basketball, but promoted healthy eating, and the importance of taking care of yourself – thus allowing the group of girls that attended to see the benefits of living well.

    After demonstrating each basketball drill and fitness workout, White assisted the young group coaching them through the drills. She held the feet of the younger girls practicing sit-ups and taught them the proper technique while encouraging them to keep going.

    “I love working with young kids. I want them to know that I know they can do it,” White said.

    White ended the clinic by speaking to the girls.

    “Eat well, such as lots of fruits and vegetables, and drink lots and lots of water,” was just one of White’s suggestions to the girls. She also stressed the importance of staying in school and that going to college is another main reason she is playing professional basketball today. The girls, ages 8-11, were very interested in White and her achievements and soaked up the Fever player’s appearance.

    The Fever’s Be Smart - Be Fit - Be Yourself Clinic fit perfectly with the Boys and Girls Club of Indianapolis mission statement: “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” This particular Boys and Girls Club has been serving kids since 1971 when it was named the 1,000th club in America.

    As part of the WNBA’s Be Smart - Be Fit - Be Yourself initiative, the Fever conducts monthly fitness clinics during the season. Fever players and coaches teach children the value of staying healthy, eating right and maintaining a positive attitude. The program gets kids active in a number of exercises and basketball drills, in addition to games, contests and book readings. The clinics are held at local schools and after-school programs for kids of all ages.
