On the Fever’s defense:
“We like to focus on our defense and rebounding. Every night, that’s what we live on. Offensive scoring will come and go, but you’ll always have a shot to win with defense.”
“Our effort and intensity, hopefully can tire people out late in games. It may not pay dividends early in games, but hopefully it pays off in the end. We like to get up into passing lanes and take people out of their game. We try to be pretty physical with people inside.”

SAN ANTONIO, TX – The Fever scored the first four points of the game and never looked back on its way to a 62-53 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars at the AT&T Center in San Antonio Tuesday night. It was the first road win for the Fever and second in a row to open up the 2006 season.
Tamika Catchings scored a season-high 23 points and added nine rebounds. Tamika Whitmore scored 16 points including six of Indiana’s first 12. Rookie Sophia Young joined Vickie Johnson with 12 points apiece for the Silver Stars. Young had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Fever jumped out to an early 10-4 advantage, hitting five of its first seven shots. Indiana would go on to lead by as many as ten points in the second quarter before leading the Silver Stars by nine at halftime. The Fever never trailed in the game.
After trailing by as many as 15 in the third quarter, San Antonio would cut the lead back down to single digits at 60-53 late in the fourth quarter. However, that is the closest the margin would be with the Fever able to keep the Silver Stars at bay throughout the night. It was Indiana’s third win in a row over San Antonio dating back to last season.
Charlotte Smith did not travel with the Fever due to an illness in her family. Rookie Kasha Terry took her place on Indiana’s active roster.
Earlier on Tuesday, Tamika Catchings was named to the 2006 USA Women’s World Championship Team.
In uniform for the Silver Stars were a pair of former Indiana Miss Basketball honorees – Shyra Ely (Ben Davis, 2001) and Shanna Zolman (Wawasee, 2002). Ely finished with two points and three rebounds. Zolman had six points.
