WNBA.com Celebrates Women's History Month:
Jackie Stiles on Jackie Joyner-Kersee

WNBA.com asked 2001 WNBA Rookie of the Year Jackie Stiles to name the woman she most admires and to talk about how she views herself in the context of women's history. Stiles shares her thoughts on track and field superstar Jackie Joyner-Kersee, the most decorated woman in U.S. Olympic track and field history with six medals.

In 1988, Joyner-Kersee became the only woman to win a gold medal in a multi-event and specialty event at the same Olympics when she earned gold in both the heptathlon and the long-jump. She is also the only woman to win two Olympic heptathlons (1988 and 1992).

"I really admire Jackie Joyner-Kersee. I’ve been a huge fan of hers. I just think she’s an amazing athlete, and I love the way she carries herself. She just has so much class, so I would love to spend the day with her.

"I can remember growing up and watching the Olympics and watching her on t.v. and just thinking, 'God, if I could just be half the athlete she is one day.' And I just think that she gave women’s sports credibility. The way she carried herself, the way she competed, it was just amazing."

If you could spend a day with her, how would you want to spend the time?
"I’d probably want to ask her all about her workouts. I’d want her to take me into the weight room and show me what kinds of things she did. I’m always looking to learn from other people that have done it before me on how they were successful, how they handled the media, how they handled just professional sports and how they handled the workouts, so I’d try and pick her brain about all those things."

Do you think of yourself and the WNBA as a part of women's history?
"I’m so appreciative of what all those women athletes did before us because we have a tremendous opportunity. We get paid to play basketball and a lot of women didn’t have those opportunities even in high school or college and they fought for everything we’re getting today, so I’m just so appreciative of everything that they went through so we could have these opportunities."
