THIS WEEK'S TOPIC

Selling the sexy side of women's sports: WNBA players dish their
thoughts on Anna Kournikova
SUE BIRD
SEATTLE STORM
"If she wasn't playing tennis, I think she'd still be making money as a model. I don't think it hurts women's sports, I think she's taking advantage of what's in front of her. We live in a man's world, so that's what's going to make money these days; what Anna's doing. But at the same time, I don't think they'd ever put a male athlete on the cover of anything if he'd never won anything."
STACEY DALES-SCHUMAN
WASHINGTON MYSTICS
"Anna Kournikova draws attention to women's tennis and that's important. Talking about her is like comparing apples and oranges; I can't talk about Anna Kournikova because I don't play tennis."
LAUREN JACKSON
SEATTLE STORM
"I think that if you've got that look and you're gorgeous and everyone loves you and you can earn money from being beautiful, then go for it. I don't know how everyone else feels about it, but take advantage of it. People want to look at her, people want to see her, they look for photos of her. She's earning money and she's happy doing that, so go for it."
DAWN STALEY
CHARLOTTE STING
"I think what she represents - sexuality - is good and bad. I think it's good that it generates interest, but it's bad when you don't win and sex is the only thing people look at you for. Not to say she is going out and blowing tournaments, but if she is going to be representative of tennis, she definitely has to do it on the court and that's winning championships."

Tennis pro Anna Kournikova has been criticized for never winning a Grand Slam tennis tournament (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, U.S. Open), yet because of her sex appeal has received more attention than most players on the tour. Sue Bird, who clearly is one of the top rookies on the court, may also benefit from her good looks.
