Diana Taurasi brought home her second gold medal as the youngest player on the
2004 Olympic Team. Her first gold medal came as a member of the 2000 Junior
World Championship Qualifying Team when she averaged 12.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists
and 4.2 rebounds while starting all five games. Taurasi also assisted USA Basketball
to a bronze medal at the 2001 Junior World Championship where she was named
to the 2001 All-FIBA Junior World Championship Team and also earned July 2001
USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Month honors.
Taurasi entered the WNBA after leading the University of Connecticut to three
National Championships. She was selected by the Phoenix Mercury in the first
round (first overall) of the 2004 draft and was named Rookie of the Year after
averaging 17.0 points, 4.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds. The Chino, California native
has been selected to two All-Star Games and recently broke the single season
scoring record and set the record for most points in a single game when she
scored 47 points in a triple-overtime win over the Houston Comets on August
10, 2006.
