Kim Smith was selected to Canada's Senior Women's National Team after trying out following her junior year at the University of Utah. Smith's averages of 13.6 points and 4.5 rebounds in five games at the 2005 FIBA Americas Tournament led Canada to a 3-2 record and a berth in the 2006 FIBA World Championships.

Smith was selected by the Sacramento Monarchs in the first round (13th overall) of the 2006 WNBA Draft. The 5-11 forward averaged 2.4 points and 1.3 rebounds while playing 31 games during her rookie season. .
