Alana Beard began her USA Basketball career in 2000 by leading the USA Basketball Women's Junior World Championship Qualifying Team to a gold medal. A year later she ranked second on the team in scoring and led the U.S. in assists and steals as the USA Basketball Women's Junior World Championship Team finished with a 6-1 record and a bronze medal at the 2001 FIBA Junior World Championship. Beard won her second gold medal in 2003 as she averaged a team second best 9.3 points and recorded a team-high 23 steals in the 2003 FIBA World Championship For Young Women.

Beard was selected second overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2004 draft after averaging 19.7 points and 5.4 rebounds during her senior season at Duke University. The two-time WNBA All-Star has averaged 15.4 points and 4.4 rebounds throughout her three-year WNBA career. During the 2006 season, Beard averaged career-high's in scoring (19.2 ppg), rebounding (4.7 rpg) and assists (3.1 apg).
