COLORADO SPRINGS (Nov. 6, 2007) -- Jamie Carey (Connecticut Sun), a silver
medalist on the 2003 USA Basketball Pan American Games Team, has been added to
the roster for the 2007 USA Basketball Women's National Team College Tour, USA
Basketball announced today. Carey, who led the WNBA in 2007 for 3-point field
goal shooting percentage (.451), will join the squad in Waco, Texas, in time for
the squad's Nov. 6 (7:00 p.m. CST) contest against Baylor University.
"I'm pleased that Jamie will be able to join the team," said USA and
Seattle Storm head coach Anne Donovan. "She will be able to help fill the
void that we've had with the guards because of
Loree Moore's injury. Jamie is
an excellent shooter as she has demonstrated with the Sun and she will give us
a nice spark off the bench."
In addition to Carey, the 10-player USA National Team roster for the 2007 College
Tour includes three-time Olympic gold medalist
Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles Sparks);
2004 Olympic gold medalists
Sue Bird (Seattle Storm),
Swin Cash (Detroit Shock)
and
Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury); as well as
Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx),
Kara Braxton (Detroit Shock),
Katie Feenstra (Detroit Shock),
Kara Lawson (Sacramento
Monarchs) and
Taj McWilliams-Franklin (Los Angeles Sparks).
Carey replaces Loree Moore (New York Liberty), who was on the roster for the 2007
College Tour, but left the team on Nov. 2 due to a flare-up of a previous left
knee aggravation. Moore also sat out the USA's final three games during the Oct.
22-27 FIBA World League Tournament and is continuing treatment and rehabilitation
in New York.
The USA is currently 3-0 in its College Tour. Opening the eight game schedule
with a 90-73 victory over the University of Maryland on Oct. 31, the U.S. squad
recorded a 90-74 win over the University of Connecticut on Nov. 1, and defeated
the University of Tennessee 83-72 on Nov. 4.
Following the game against Baylor, the USA continues its 2007 College Tour on
Nov. 8 against Arizona State University in Tempe at 6:30 p.m. (all times local),
then returns to the Lone Star State for a Nov. 11 match-up against Texas A&M
University in College Station at 6:00 p.m. Moving west to California for its final
two games, Nov. 13 will see the USA pitted against the University of Southern
California in Los Angeles at 7:00 p.m., and the USA concludes its tour on Nov.
15 at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., at 7:00 p.m.
Previously two USA Basketball National Teams have undertaken a college tour. The
historic 1995-96 USA National Team went 20-0 against top NCAA programs, while
the 1999-2000 USA National Team compiled a mark of 11-1 during its pre-Olympic
training. The only schools on the 2007 tour that the USA previously has faced
are Connecticut, Stanford and Tennessee. The '95-96 squad defeated Connecticut
83-47 on Nov. 5, Stanford 100-63 on Nov. 10 and Tennessee 82-58 on Nov. 22; while
the 1999-2000 squad downed Stanford 82-58 on Nov. 1 and lost 65-64 at Tennessee
following a buzzer-beater by then-Lady Vol freshman Lawson on Nov. 7.
Donovan is being assisted during the team's College Tour by USA National Team
assistant and Connecticut Sun head coach Mike Thibault. USA National Team assistants
Gail Goestenkors of the University of Texas and Dawn Staley of Temple University
are unable to participate during the College Tour due to their collegiate coaching
schedules.
