San Antonio Silver Stars: 2003 Preview

May 7 -- For the San Antonio Silver Stars, 2003 is a conundrum. On the one hand, this is a team that needs to embrace change in order to be successful. On the other hand, the Silver Stars would like nothing more than to build on their outstanding 2002 campaign.

Goodson
They'll have to build on last season in a new home, however. The Silver Stars are the former Utah Starzz, a team that went all the way to the 2002 Western Conference Finals, where they were ousted by the eventual-champion Los Angeles Sparks. While there may be an adjustment period inherent in switching cities, the Silver Stars have a solid core of veteran players who should make the transition much easier.

Chief among this veteran core is fourth-year player Adrienne Goodson (15.7 ppg, 5.7 rpg). The 2002 All-Star led the team in scoring last season, and ranked 10th in the league overall. Goodson is complemented at off-guard by fellow All-Star Marie Ferdinand (15.3 ppg), and fourth-year veteran Jennifer Azzi (9.6 ppg, 4.9 apg) at the point.

While the backcourt remains settled, the frontcourt is where the team will have to make some adjustments. Talented power forward Natalie Williams was sent to Indiana -- along with draft pick Coretta Brown -- for Sylvia Crawley and rookie Gwen Jackson (Tennessee). The 6-5 Crawley averaged 8.7 ppg and 4.2 rpg last season, and will provide inside strength for the Stars.

The 6-2 Jackson, meanwhile, is a versatile player who could blossom into one of the league's premier forwards. "We like what Gwen can bring to the forward position," said coach Candi Harvey. "She can shoot the 3-pointer, put the ball on the floor and post up."

San Antonio's low post will still be ably anchored by fifth-year center Margo Dydek. The 7-2 center averaged career highs in scoring and rebounds last season (13.1 ppg, 8.7 rpg), and led the WNBA in blocks (3.57) for the fifth-straight year. Dydek has not re-signed with the team yet, but is expected to.

Key Newcomers:

The Silver Stars picked up LaQuanda Barksdale (5.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg) in the Dispersal Draft. At 5-11, Barksdale can play both the guard and forward positions, and while she never had a breakout season with Portland, the former UNC star could certainly contribute in San Antonio.

San Antonio also picked up Ke-Ke Tardy and Brooke Armistead in the second and third rounds of the 2003 Draft, respectively. Tardy is a 6-1 forward out of LSU, while Armistead was a standout guard who averaged 20.9 ppg for her career at Austin Peay.
