Photographic Memory: Shannon Johnson

WNBA.com's "Photographic Memory" asks players to look at a photo of themselves and talk about what it captures -- what was going through their mind at that moment of the game and what the photo reveals about their style. Here, Connecticut's Shannon Johnson talks about her strategy on defense and her rivalries with other point guards.

You Can Tell I'm A Little Tired
I'm tired. I'm leaning over. I'm glad the person's holding the ball, but you can tell I'm a little tired. I don't even have a good defensive stance and I'm bending my back more than I'm bending my knees. But really, I like to play defense and I like to get in people and try to stop them and make sure they don't do a good job for their team, but one thing I try to pride myself on is being a defensive stopper ... So anytime that I'm going to play, I'm going to play hard and try to stop their point guard from doing what they need to do, so that's pretty much what I think about right there. I'm a little tired though, you got me at the end of a game.

I try to time people, I try to give them a little bump and see if they'll go off a little bit, but lately it's been kind of hard because we’ve got so many point guards now that are able to handle the ball with both hands. So now what we try and do is just try and stay to them and try to get their timing off. A lot of the point guards now, it's hard to steal from them, so you try to push them out and bump them.

It's a lot of fun whenever you play against other point guards because we all try and time each other and do the same things on each other, so it's what each point guard does to each other, some of us are friends, and some of us are more competitive, trying to get our team to win, so it's a lot of fun. I think point guards have that same love, mentality of playing against each other, of trying to stop each other.

Point Guard Rivalries
I think me and Spoon [Teresa Weatherspoon] have had it for a long time, but now that I've got Debbie Black on my team, it's kind of funny because she was one of the people that I hated playing against, but now she's on my team and it's a lot of fun because I do it every day, so when I'm in the game, I'm more attentive. So, I think Spoon has been somebody that I've respected for so long and playing against, but she's one of the top defenders and I know she'll try to stop me every night when she plays against me, so I try to do the same thing when I play against her, but the respect is definitely there.

Do I Know Who I'm Guarding?
It doesn't matter. I've got to watch the ball. I try to watch the ball and get into their bodies a little bit, especially when they try to hold it, I try to go up into them. But if they get ready to bounce it or something, I've got my eye on the ball because I'm trying to steal and time it. As players, you try to time stuff, when to attack and stuff like that. But if they pick their dribble up, my eyes are all over it.
