Suffering through a 10 game losing streak, Minnesota looked to second-year guard Seimone Augustus to help dig them out of their rut. Augustus played with a vengeance, leading her team to two wins last week, making her the WNBA.com Peak Performer.
Augustus was just warming up in Wednesday's game against Phoenix. In 29 minutes, she posted just 13 points and three assists. It was not enough to stop the Mercury's triple threat of Diana Taurasi, Cappie Pondexter and Penny Taylor, as the Lynx dropped their 10th consecutive game 103-79.
On Friday, Augustus turned up the heat as the Lynx battled the Sparks. She had five defensive rebounds and three steals, helping to shut down the Los Angeles offense. Augustus and teammate Svetlana Abrosimova tied with a game-high 23 points as L.A. was unable to handle Minnesota's fierce offense. The Lynx ended their losing ways, posting a 85-76 victory.
The offensive heat from Friday's game escalated into a blazing fire Sunday afternoon as the Lynx took on the Monarchs.
"My goal was to get to the basket and try to get a good shot. I wasn't trying to just make threes all the time or just take jumpers but I wanted to try to mix it up," Augustus explains.
While she credits her team for their play, Augustus' leadership and her ability to sink shots led to a game-high -- and career-high -- 39 points as the Lynx scored a 78-73 win over the defending Western champs.
With Augustus pulling the trigger, the Lynx snapped their losing streak and they will now look to get a third consecutive win Thursday night in New York.
For being Minnesota's most potent weapon in their time of need, Seimone Augustus
is this week's Peak Performer.
