Any WNBA fan knows that Detroit Shock center Cheryl Ford is a rebounding force, but what they may not have realized is that Cheryl Ford is becoming a scoring force as well.
While averaging 18.3 points per game to go along with her usual 12 rebounds this week, the league's leading rebounder earned this week's HANNspree Innovative Performance of the Week after leading the Detroit Shock to a 3-0 record. The two-time All-Star, former back-to-back WAC Player of the Year, and 2003 WNBA Rookie of the Year is putting up the best numbers of her young career so far this season.
Last Thursday, Ford scored a career-high 24 points while adding 14 rebounds to lead the Shock over the Charlotte Sting, 86-74. Her impressive scoring performance carried over to the weekend as she scored 18 points on 8-9 shooting in a 92-85 win over the Washington Mystics on Saturday. To end the week, Ford scored 13 points to go along with 18 rebounds as the Shock defeated the Sting for the second time in the week, 71-61.
