The Connecticut Sun won all three of its games last week, extending its streak to five games. A look at the numbers indicated that Douglas got stronger as the week progressed. On Sunday, Connecticut outscored Washington by nine in the third quarter en route to an 85-71 home win over the Mystics. Katie Douglas and Nykesha Sales combined for 50 points with Douglas netting 26 and Sales chipping in a season-high 24.
Those who watched that game on NBA TV know that Douglas can beat you in a number of ways. She can hit the mid-range and 3-point field goals, but also has the ability to drive and score. Yet, one of the most underrated aspects of her game is her perimeter defense. There are few, if any, who are better. She was a First-Team All-Defensive honoree last season and is back at it again with 2.5 steals per game this season.
Among overall league ranks, Douglas is seventh in the WNBA with 17.6 points per game, second with the 2.5 steals per game and tops overall with 20 total steals. She also ranks #1 with 17 3-point field goals #11 in the WNBA in 3-point percentage(0.447). She is also tenth in overall feld-goal percentage (0.511), which is most impressive for a shooting guard.
A 2001 graduate from Purdue where she helped lead the Boilermakers to a NCAA title, Douglas' career averages are 10.4 points per game and 1.5 steals per contest with the Orlando Miracle and Connecticut Sun. Both are sure to rise as the season continues.
