Catching Up with Becky Hammon
By Matt Wurst, WNBA.com

March 15 -- With the 2004 WNBA preseason tipping off in just over six weeks, New York Liberty guard Becky Hammon is using the remaining time to get herself ready to return from her season-ending knee injury last June. However, once she is back out on the court, a familiar face will be missing.

Q. How have you been rehabilitating since your injury?

"I have been doing rehab and finally gotten back on the court. I’m excited about that and everything should be ready to go by the time training camp rolls around. "

Q. What has the comeback process been like for you?

"The comeback process is difficult because you get hurt physically, but it takes a toll on you mentally as well, so just getting back in tune with yourself on the court and getting your body to do the things it’s capable of doing and being comfortable enough to just trust that knee and believing that it is healed."

Q. Do you ever have any doubts?

"Doubts definitely creep in here and there, but overall, I’d say 98% of the time, you are confident in it. You’re going to have your moment just like everyone else, but what you do is focus on all the work that you’ve put into it and just have faith in God that everything is going to be alright. But I am dying to get back on the court."

Q. Are you looking forward to playing with your new teammate, Ann Wauters?

"I think Ann is a great pickup. She is a versatile player in the post with the ability to step out and take the ball to the basket and to be a good passer. So she is a nice addition, not to mention she brings some youthfulness to the team which I know they were trying to do."

Q. How does her addition make the Liberty better?

"With Ann, Tari and Elena all down there and able to make shots, we are really going to spread defenses and make teams work."

Q. What will it be like without T-Spoon this season?

"It’s going to be weird not only when we play them, but seeing her in purple and yellow. I am happy for her that she is going to a good situation, into a winning program. She is so competitive and doesn’t take losing well. I think she’ll have a good season in L.A. and she’ll fit right in with that city."

Q. Do you think New York will miss her?

"She is always going to be in the heart of the city, in the heart of the Liberty. You can’t replace an original, and she was definitely original. We’re going to miss her not only on the court, but I’m going to miss her off the court as well. She has a presence about her both on and off the court. It’s going to be really, really strange, especially when she comes back to the Garden."
